One of the easiest and cheapest ways to update a yard or patio for spring is to makeover outdoor furniture.  I’m going to share with you how to spray paint metal outdoor furniture to last a long time.  It’s an easy one afternoon project that anyone can tackle and following a few simple steps has everything to do with how well your outdoor furniture makeover holds up over time. It’s feeling like spring already around here.  The days are getting longer, we have bright blue skies, and the temperatures have been perfect for outdoor activities.  This is about the time of year where I start dreaming of all kinds of outdoor DIY projects to spruce up the yard. Do you get like that too when the weather starts getting nice? If so, my how to spray paint metal outdoor furniture tutorial is a great way to welcome spring with cheery colors and best of all, it can be done in an afternoon! Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer Spray Paint, this also comes in quarts for brush on applications Rustoleum Protective Enamel Spray Paint,  I used turquoise spray paint handle, this is a huge hand saver if you have a big job! drop cloth scrub brush Prepare your outdoor furniture for painting by first washing it with TSP and a scrub brush to remove any dirt buildup or grease from the metal. When it’s dry, you’ll remove as much rust as you can.  Take the wire brush, and briskly run it across any area on your metal outdoor furniture frame that has rust.  The idea is to knock off as much rust as possible, especially any loose or caked on rust. Pay extra attention to corners and tight spots. It was hard to imagine this set being pretty in the state it was in! Next you’ll start priming.  Lay your metal outdoor furniture on your drop cloth and spray with the Rustoleum primer.   Apply light coats and let dry thoroughly between each cost before moving on to the next area to spray paint. Let dry thoroughly. Follow the same steps with the Rustoleum enamel spray paint. Again, light coats are best to avoid paint drips. Colorful outdoor furniture can add style and character to any backyard and is the perfect accent for your next neighborhood gathering. There’s nothing more iconic when it comes to backyard furniture than the classic Adirondack chair. Here’s how to use spray paint to give a wooden Adirondack chair a bright new color.  Supplies Wooden Adirondack Patio Chair 220-grit sand paper Sanding block Lint-free rags Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X White Primer Rust-Oleum Universal Gloss spray paint Work gloves (optional) First thing’s first – prep! Always work in a well ventilated area. At any point during the project, protective gloves can help keep your hands clean – especially once you get to priming and painting. Lightly sand all surfaces. Wipe clean with tack cloth, removing all dust. Get your primer ready by shaking the can for one minute after the ball begins to rattle. Hold the can 10-16 in. from the surface of the Adirondack chair and spray in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. If you plan to apply a second coat, be sure to apply it within the first hour, while paint is still wet. If you cannot get to the next step within 60 minutes, plan to wait 24 hours until your first coating is completely dry. Repeat the same steps for the spray paint as you did with the primer. Shake the can for one minute after the ball begins to rattle. Hold the can 10-16 in. from the surface of the Adirondack chair and spray in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. For best results, apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart. Almost done! Allow your colorful Adirondack chairs to dry for 24 hours. For an added touch of fun, consider spray painting a decorative stencil on the arms or backs of your new backyard beauties. Always thoroughly review directions on the package before using any product.

Spray using a back and forth motion, holding the can far enough away for a consistent spray pattern to avoid drips and overspray. Follow the natural lines of the chair to coat it evenly. It turns out that there is a spray paint for outdoor furniture and I’ll tell you which one worked best. If you haven’t read the post about the original problem with my chalky residue plastic adirondack chairs you can get caught up right here, but let’s just say that even with a little bit of fading they are still way better than what I started with a year ago.
